This performance was judged so that the College of Piping could lay claim to be the 4th Best in the World in their category, Grade 3.
Pretty remarkable, when you consider that 17 of the 24 band members are under the age of 19! (The youngest is 12!)
These kids competed against other bands that had players that have been playing competively, longer than these kids have been alive!

I was there to witness this, and I can tell you, it was one of the proudest moments in my life.

The day before, a group got together and went to Stirling Castle. Alas we did not get to see any sword fights but the castle itself was neat. Calvin and Jonothan threated to jump off the stone wall into the moat but since there was no water below I guess they had second thoughts. They enjoyed looking in all the nooks and crannies. I think those two boys have enjoyed the castles more than anyone! Great age to be.

Afterwards we grabbed a bite at one of the favorite eating holes, an old pub called O’Neil’s where some neat old sayings are written on the walls for clients to ponder as they await their meals. One is ‘good things come to those who…wait.’ Another is ‘toilets this way’ and then on the next wall ‘toilets still this way.’ It’s fun! Everyone has enjoyed listening to Scottish accents and I think for me that that is what I will miss the most. They are fun people, these Scots, and they have been very good to all of us.

Well, gotta go get ready to catch that bus into Worlds! My stomach is already fluttering. We will have lots of fans, we met folks briefly last nite who plan to be there – they are pipers and so will give us their honest opinion and we know they will have great things to say about our little PEI band! (if we can just decipher their Scottish brogue, I think they get tired of repeating themselves for us!)

I think everyone is likely very inspired after the Field Marshall Montgomery show last nite in Glasgow. We were bused in and first visited the local College of Piping, which was small and cozy, and featured some sets of very old bagpipes in their little museum. They also had a neat mural on one wall that featured a number of piobreachs (oops, haven’t studied that word enough to learn to spell it yet, think there is another i in there somewhere!). Afterwards everyone fanned out to eat somewhere and then met at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, which was spacious and modern and reminiscent of Confederation Centre in Charlottetown.

Field Marshall Montgomery is a pipe band from Northern Ireland. They had about 21 or 22 pipers, so you can imagine the awesome, incredible volume. Their tenor drummers spun their mallets so fast that you could barely see them – they were white whirls accentuating heart stopping rhythmns and beautiful, sweet harmonies. A couple feature performers on djembe and drum set and guitar (I think – couldn’t see him well) gave the performance an updated swing. In the back was a video screen which detailed some of the history of this wonderful Grade One band. All in all – we took the roof off the place with our cheering, and I would say our kids were treated to a once in a lifetime band experience that inspired them to keep on playing! Side note: Alex Gandy played in the band – some of you will know him as Bruce Gandy’s son.

We’re getting close – just a few days away now – today is cloudy but some sun is sneaking through, and we are hoping and praying for good weather on the big day.

Kids are great, a bit tired maybe but in good spirits. Tammy, Calvin had a minor headache during the concert last nite but it didn’t bother him too much – he’s a trooper – this morning he is in great spirits, happy go lucky and joking around with Christopher. Susan W., Nyall says he’s not eating and that he is dwindling away to nothing – just kidding, he says he is eating great and Courtney is taking good care of him. For the parents of girls, it’s a fashion show every day over here as they model their new tops. They were happy to learn that Glasgow is only second to London in the world for shopping! Oh, the perks of playing in a pipe band!

 Susan can confirm this when she gets a chance however it appears that they are trying to get a live radio interview put together for tomorrow, Thurday Aug 9 afternoon.  this will be on a CBC Radio One show called Q that airs from 2:00 to 3:30.
